A volcano in Iceland has erupted, forcing over 500 people to leave their homes. Evacuated people are being accommodated at Red Cross Centres in nearby villages.
The outbreak began with ash rain over the glacier Eyjafallajoekull at midnight, Icelandic time on Sunday.
“We believe that no one is in danger but we have executed an evacuation plan for between 500 and 600 people” says Sigurgeir Gudmundsson of Iceland’s civil defence authority.
Fire And Ice
Evacuation has taken place due to the the risk of flooding from melting ice. The volcano, which is around 4 kilometres in diameter is covered by a large ice cap. In recent weeks earthquakes have been felt in the vicinity.
Flight delays and cancellations are expected.
The two most recent volcanic eruptions in the vicinity of the glacier Eyjafallajoekull were 1821 and 1823
