McDonalds close down Iceland branches

Iceland’s McDonald restaurants are to close down in November. According to the company it is because of the the country’s difficult economic situation.

Because the McDonald restaurants in Iceland are forced to import all goods packaging, meat, vegetables and cheese from Germany and the Icelandic krona has lost so much value versus the Euro and other currencies it has become uneconomic to run the burger restaurants in Iceland.

The owner of the McDonalds franchise in Iceland, Jon Gardar Ögmundsson thinks that it is unlikely that McDonalds will return to Iceland in the future. He now plans to start other hamburger restaurants, which instead uses local produce. If you are a fast food fan and want to visit Iceland, don’t worry the island still has KFC, Subway, Pizza Hut and Domino’s Pizza.
